Preventing the Spread of AIllness in the Workplace
t the time of this writing, Coronavirus—or COVID-19—is generating new headlines every hour in the mainstream news. Cases are multiply- ing, fatalities growing and governments pitching in
more funding to research and create a vaccine for the virus. COVID-19 is a very serious illness that is taking our world by storm. The chances of a fatality are heightened for those that are older, have weakened immune systems or prior respirato- ry issues. The World Health Organization has gone on record describing the virus as a mild flu for those who are generally healthy. Even if you do not feel that you are at risk of contracting the virus, we can all do our part to prevent the spread of CO-
VID-19, or any other illnesses like the flu.
Here are some tips, recommended by the Center for Disease
Control, or CDC, that will help your workplace stay healthy:
Encourage regular hand-washing. Remind employees that the best way to prevent the
spread of any illness is to regularly wash their hands and avoid touching their nose, mouth or eyes. The CDC recommends washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or as long as it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice.
Perform Routine Environmental Cleaning. Routinely clean all frequently touched surfaces in the workplace, such as workstations, countertops and doorknobs. Feel free to use cleaning agents that are normally used in those spaces and follow the directions on the label. It is helpful to supply workers with disposable wipes so that they can wipe down workstations before use.
Actively Encourage Sick Employees to Stay Home. It is recommended by health pro- fessionals that any person that may have symptoms of illness stay home and not come to work until they are free of fever, signs of fever and any other symptoms for at least 24 hours. Employers should ensure that their sick leave are flexible and consistent with public health guidance and that employees are well aware of these policies.
At the end of the day, keeping the workplace healthy boils down to having an open and honest dialogue with your workers. Be sure to communicate to employees the company’s plans and positively engage workers to help prevent the spread of any illness.
“Keeping the workplace healthy boils down to having an open and honest dialogue with your workers.”
