New CDC Statistics on
IAccidental Deaths, Life Expectancy
n January, the CDC released new data that shows life expec- tancy in the United States has increased for the first time in four years. This upward swing is being attributed to a decline in cancer-related deaths, fatal overdoes and, in part, a de-
crease in deaths from unintentional, preventable injuries.
These unintentional, preventable injuries are often referred to as “accidents” and new data shows a 1.7 percent decrease in accidents in 2018 as compared to 2017 when deaths from pre-
ventable injuries were at an all-time high.
“Despite these encouraging statistics, preventable injuries
still remain the third leading cause of death, behind heart dis-
ease and cancer, with 167,127 reported in 2018,” the National
Safety Council said in a press release. “Any decline in deaths is
promising, but the only acceptable number is zero. Too many
people are losing their lives due to causes that are completely unnecessary and unnatural.”
The data shows that U.S. complacency causes more than 457 deaths on a typical day due to drug overdoses, motor vehicle crashes, falls, drowning, choking or other preventable oc- currences.
Other notable data changes from the CDC are:
The amount of deaths caused by falls in 2018 increased 3.1 percent from 2017, with 1,117 more people losing their lives due to falls in 2018.
In 2018, less people died as a result of preventable injuries associated with machinery. There was a decrease of 8.2 percent in machinery-related deaths in 2018.
There was a 26 percent increase in deaths related to electric currents in 2018.
One hundred and sixty more people died from fire, flames or smoke-related accidents in 2018 than in 2017, an increase of 5.7 percent.
“Unintentional injuries are not an unavoidable reality,” the NSC said. “Consistently priori- tizing safety at work, on the road and at home can go a long way toward protecting those we love. If we all make safety a personal commitment, we can continue to lower the number of preventable deaths.”
“Any decline in deaths is promising, but the only acceptable number is zero.”
