TNew Beginnings
here are two things that I was told repeatedly when I first came on board as the editor of Occupational Health & Safety:
1. The safety industry is a highly regulated but seemingly slow-moving space.
2. The people within it are the most informed, friendly and helpful people you will ever meet.
In just the first few months of my transition into the industry, I can positively say that both of those things are true. It was my trip to New Orleans for the ASSP Safety 2019 trade show last month where I continued to learn more about standards and guidelines, see solution-focused products and speak face-to-face with industry experts that it all truly started to “click” for me.
In order for you to understand me a little better, it is best for you to know that my back- ground is in the security industry—think physical security solutions like locks, gates, video surveillance cameras, bollards, metal detectors and more.
I like to say that the security industry, compared to the safety industry, is like the Wild, Wild West. There is no overarching regulating body that produces standards and hands down citations to companies who are not implementing security correctly. For the most part, secu- rity solutions are chosen and installed on a case-by-case basis and the level of technology is dictated by budget restraints.
The safety industry, much like the security industry, is aimed at keeping people safe. The biggest difference is that in the safety industry the focus is on prevention. Regulations, stan- dards, guidelines and citations are commonplace so that accidents and emergency situations never happen in the first place. It is refreshing to be welcomed into an industry that works hard to be proactive, rather than reactive.
I am looking forward to fully immersing myself in the safety industry and moving forward with this truly impressive and knowledgeable community of safety professionals. I know it is going to be one of the most rewarding endeavors of my career.

CORRECTION
A photo caption in the June 2019 issue’s article titled “More Choices, More Challenges for Choosing Hand Protection” (page 40) incorrectly stated that the vertical flame test shown is part of NFPA 2112. The test is not part of that standard.
