HHS Secretary Dr. Tom Price on July 7 appointed Brenda Fitzger- ald, M.D., as CDC director and adminis- trator of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). She is the 17th director in CDC’s history, follow- ing Dr. Tom Frieden. Fitzgerald had been the commissioner of the Georgia Depart- ment of Public Health and the state health officer for the past six years. Also on July 7, as a result of Fitzgerald’s appointment, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal appointed Dr. J. Patrick O’Neal, who was director of Health Protection for the Georgia Depart- ment of Public Health, as the department’s interim commissioner. . . . ■ Health & Safety Institute, a leader in environmental health and safety software, training, and compliance services, an- nounced June 13 the acquisition of Min- neapolis-based CLMI Safety Training, a provider of safety training videos and pro- grams. “The addition of a well-known com- pany like CLMI to the HSI family of com- panies represents a great opportunity, and we look forward to working closely with their team to expand our offerings to the market,” said HSI CEO Chad Birckelbaw.
“We are excited about the opportunity to become part of the HSI family of com- panies,” said Rick Pollock, president and CEO of CLMI. “HSI is a growing company with the same mission as CLMI of deliver- ing great service to customers, high-quality content, and industry-leading solutions.”
■ MSA Safety Inc. announced June 28 that it had entered into a definitive agree- ment to acquire Globe Holding Company, LLC, a Pittsfield, N.H.-based provider of firefighter apparel and boots, in an all- cash $215 million transaction. “Helping to keep firefighters safe has been a constant of MSA’s mission since the 1920s. With vir- tually no product overlap, this acquisition aligns extremely well with our corporation strategy,” said MSA Chairman and CEO William M. Lambert.
■ Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. an inter- national insurance brokerage and risk man- agement services firm headquartered in Rolling Meadows, Ill., announced on June 7 the acquisition of Total Reward Group in Kent, England. Founded in 2005, Total Re- ward Group is a UK consultancy offering
remuneration support, executive search, in- terim placement, and corporate training for reward professionals worldwide.
■ Rockford Systems, LLC (Rockford, IL, www.rockfordsystems.com), a leader in machine safeguarding technologies, an- nounced a new partnership with Lazersafe® by becoming an authorized distributor of the Lazersafe Sentinel Plus press brake guarding system.
■ Minneapolis-based Pace Analytical, a leader in environmental and life science testing, recently acquired ESC Lab Sciences (Mt Juliet, Tenn.) Peter Schulert, former CEO of ESC, is now in an executive role at Pace. ESC will continue to operate under the ESC name and is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Pace Analytical, LLC.
Awards & Recognition
■ Nestlé recently received the 2017 Ver- dantix EHS Innovation Award in Food & Beverage at the Verdantix Summit event in Houston. Nestlé received the award for implementing UL EHS Sustainability safe- ty, health, and environmental sustainability software across its 1,400 facilities world- wide; the company has engaged more than 2,000 employees in the project.
