THE COMPLIANCE TEAM
Transforming Clinical Respiratory HME Accreditation
2019marks 25 years since nurse entrepreneur
Sandra C. Canally, RN, formed The Compliance Team, Inc. (TCT),
the nation’s first nationally recognized, certi- fied woman-owned, healthcare accreditation organization.
Today, The Compliance Team is approved by Medicare to accredit Part A-Rural Health Clinic and Patient-Centered Medical Home practitioners as well as Part B-Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, Supplies (DMEPOS) providers. It is the only healthcare accreditation organization authorized by the Secretary of Health and Human Services to con- fer Exemplary Provider® accredited status.
From the outset, the company’s stated mis- sion has been to facilitate a dramatic transfor- mation of healthcare accreditation by simplify- ing what had become an overly complex and burdensome validation process into a more reliable consumer-friendly indicator of patient care quality.
“Simplification leads to clarity and clarity allows the provider to focus on improving their everyday services to their patients and their own bottom lines,” according to Canally.
Judging by her firm’s latest offering, the principal author and architect of TCT’s industry leading suite of operations-based accreditation programs is not one to rest on her laurels.
Clinical Respiratory HME accreditation transformation
The Compliance Team’s Patient-Centered Respiratory HomeTM (PCRH) accreditation program targets advanced care medical equip- ment organizations who serve the nation’s growing in-home population of critical needs respiratory patients.
Known for being the first healthcare ac- creditation organization to develop plain language service specific quality standards and the accompanying evidence of compliance to meet those standards, The Compliance Team launched its new PCRH program at Medtrade last Fall in Atlanta. As a result, the firm received the 2018 HME Business New Product Award for Business Services.
The Compliance Team’s clinical home respiratory program evolved from the firm’s Medicare-approved Patient-Centered Medical Home accreditation program for Part A practi- tioners. “We felt that there also needed to be an accreditation designation for those respira- tory care HME providers who are practicing at the top of their license,” Canally explained.
As a business owner Canally is ever mindful of the impact that The Compliance Team’s pro- grams have on a provider’s bottom line. “It was our intention from the start to have a specific Exemplary Provider®-accredited designation for Patient-Centered Respiratory HomeTM so HME respiratory specialists can use it to attract new referral sources and patients. It will give them a leg up on their competition, and per- haps even lead to higher reimbursements for the extraordinary 24/7 services they provide,” she added.
Operations-based quality improvement
Patient-Centered Respiratory HomeTM is the first accreditation program of its kind. It is purposely designed to help clinical respiratory providers act as the care hub for their high-risk “critical needs” patients so that they can avoid unnecessary emergency department visits and lead more independent lives.
An expert TCT Accreditation Advisor is as- signed to each new PCRH program participant.
A series of comprehensive implementation webinars cover all relevant everyday busi-
ness practices touching upon: Administra- tion, Patient Services, Infection Control, Risk Management, Corporate Compliance, Human Resources and Government Regulatory mea- sures. Special attention is given to patient care management and planning as well as respira- tory specialist/prescriber communications and coordination.
Value-added services make TCT different
The Compliance Team’s PCRH program includes on-going mentoring, policy & pro- cedure templates; self-assessment checklists, and corporate compliance/ anti-fraud plans.
A subscription to The Compliance Team’s national patient satisfaction reporting and benchmarking web portal is also included as another value-added feature. TCT’s secure Patient Quality MeasurementTM (PQMTM) is the industry’s oldest such database holding the results of over 2 million standardized DMEPOS satisfaction questionnaires.
It all adds up to an unrivaled accreditation value that benefits patients, the public and third-party payers while giving clinical respira- tory providers the recognition they deserve for performing at the top of their license.
Sandra (Sandy) Canally, RN, The Compliance Team’s Founder and CEO, presents Henry B. Loe, the owner of Breath of Life, a clinical respi- ratory medical equipment provider in Sherman, Texas, with the 1st Patient-Centered Respiratory HomeTM Certificate of Accreditation at Medtrade Fall 2018 in Atlanta.
