Therapeutic Footwear
Product Solutions
By Sydny Shepard
While there are many uncertainties in HME fund-
ing and revenues, there is never a doubt about the dependability of stock-
ing therapeutic footwear. Footwear has been identified as a solid source of revenue, especially because it offers a mix of retail and funded revenue that comes back year after year. Suffice it to say that clients need shoes and hosiery, and even more so if it is prescribed.
A provider can make roughly $200 a patient because of the many types of footwear-related items a person may need and broad scope of items that falls under the category of therapeutic footwear. We are talking more than just shoes. A patient may need orthotic inserts, compression hosiery, specialized footwear for diabetic patients or footwear unique to an occupation.
Part of the therapeutic footwear business is knowing how to properly size a product to a patient’s foot, as well as conduct pressure mapping. These products use a special sizing system that takes very specific measurements of a patient’s feet so that the footwear can be tailored exactly to that patient.
Another benefit of stocking therapeutic footwear is the reoccurring revenue that comes out of one purchase. While a patient may buy a pair of shoes that will last them the entire year, they may come back to replace the inserts inside two or three times a year. Moreover, these products will turn over as fashion trends come in and out and personal taste evolves.
Besides, who doesn’t like a new pair of shoes? Let’s take a look at some recent offerings.
