 EMERGING CYBERSECURITY
Mobile phones store a wide array of information these days, which makes them attractive targets for adversaries, terrorists, organized crime and independent hackers.
Fortunately, many agencies are already implementing a single-pane-of-glass approach to managing all the devices on their networks. In addition, Congress has given CIOs more authority over federal IT budgets because lawmakers know that a good portion of those budgets will go toward cyber defenses.
As the challenges increase, however, the government must become more
nimble. An internet year is three months, but a government fiscal year is 12 months. Our adversaries are not waiting for the next procurement before they strike.
They are attacking us daily, so we need legislation to speed up the procurement process.
In a radio broadcast in 1941 during World War II, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill appealed to the
United States to provide military assistance by saying, “Give us the tools, and we will finish the job.”
The same statement could be applied to our government’s cybersecurity today: If we give our agencies the tools, they will finish the job.
