Announcing the
dig IT Award finalists BY TROY K. SCHNEIDER
GCN’s dig IT Awards celebrate discovery and innovation in government IT — the cutting-edge technology and creative implementations that are supporting critical missions in the public sector. We are pleased to announce our 2017 finalists, chosen from nearly 200 nominees across all levels of government.
There are five categories, and each has five finalists. All 25 projects will be profiled in GCN and on GCN.com, and their teams will be honored in person at the GCN dig IT Awards Gala on Oct. 19 at the Hilton in Tysons Corner, Va.
The overall winner in each category, as selected by our judging panel of top government IT innovators, will be announced at the gala. In the meantime, join us in congratulating the 2017 finalists.
digs into
government
data
BY SARA FRIEDMAN
In an effort make government agencies’ open data more accessible, the If This Then That platform, which allows users to create integrations and conditional triggers to “do more with all your apps,” has released a number of new applets that pull data from government sources and deliver it via users’ email, collaboration platform accounts and social media channels.
The Data Access Project enables IFTTT users to sign up for hundreds
of applets from a number of federal agencies. Users looking for information from the Environmental Protection Agency, for example, can share climate information to their Facebook pages or receive weekly news updates pertaining to the Superfund program, the EPA
in general or activities relevant to
their geographical location. The news updates can be sent to email, Twitter or Slack accounts.
Besides news, users can receive notifications of grant opportunities, alerts about cybersecurity threats
and transit information from a number of cities.
They can also build their own applets. Government employees have created ones that alert them when their agencies are mentioned on Reddit or when a
pull request has been submitted to an agency’s GitHub repository.
For more information on how governments can build applets, go to IFTTT.com. •
