Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert Wilkie fired the No. 2 official at the VA in February. “I dismissed VA Deputy Secretary James Byrne due to loss
of confidence in Mr. Byrne’s ability to carry out his duties,” Wilkie stated in a terse press release. “This decision is effective immediately.”
Justice Department CIO Joe Klimavicz has retired after nearly 40 years of federal service. He was the department’s CIO since
2014 and vice chairman of the CIO Council since mid-2018.
In a Feb. 13 memo to DOE staff, Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette announced that Alexander Gates would replace Karen Evans as director of the Energy Department’s Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security and
for cyber in DOE’s Office of Intelligence and Counterintelligence. He previously worked on intelligence analysis and cyber operations at the National Security Agency.
J. David Cox, national president of the American Federation of Government Employees, resigned in February amid allegations of misuse of union funds and sexual harassment. He had been on a leave of absence since October 2019 after cur- rent and former employees said they had witnessed or experienced inappropriate conduct by Cox.
