Given the fluid nature of cyberattacks, agencies need flexible yet targeted strategies
GUARDING AGAINST CYBERATTACKS and other security threats has become a way of life. Every week, there seems to be another news story about a security breach at a government agency, and the landscape of cyberthreats continues to evolve at a dizzying pace. Attackers are well-organized and well-funded, and government agencies are chal- lenged to respond in kind — with full force and effect.
Cyberattacks are “incredibly serious — and growing,” the FBI has said in official statements. “Cyber intrusions are becoming more commonplace, more dangerous and more sophisticated.”
Beyond the security and criminal ramifications, the costs associated with cyberattacks and breaches are prohibitive. According to the “2017 Cost of Data Breach Study: Global Overview,” the average
cost of a breach was $3.6 million worldwide while the average organizational cost in the United States was more than $7 million. The cost per stolen record averages $141 globally, but data breaches are most expensive in the U.S., with an average per capita cost of $225, according to the report, which was sponsored by IBM Security and independently conducted by the Ponemon Institute.
