for collaboration,” she said. “And that needs to be protected before” a breach takes place.
What’s next for NASA IT?
President Donald Trump has said he wants to see a man walk on Mars dur- ing his presidency, but NASA faces plenty of earthbound priorities in the interim.
Trump’s fiscal 2018 budget request for NASA is $19.1 billion, about a $500 mil- lion decrease compared to the enacted fiscal 2017 figure, but includes a slight bump in IT spending. Wynn said she remains focused on her management priorities. In addition to adhering to fed-
eral benchmarks, those priorities include improving cybersecurity, using NASA’s purchasing power more strategically and managing software, all of which require more centralized coordination.
“Just because you’re buying some- thing at Glenn [Research Center] doesn’t mean you need it at Armstrong [Flight Research Center],” she said, adding that each software purchase needs to answer a basic question: “What are you trying to do?”
In an environment where cyberat- tacks, especially those from former space race rivals, are becoming more serious and more frequent, Wynn said finding a way to manage and protect all
the data NASA collects is perhaps the most pressing challenge.
“We’re bringing back more and more data from space.... That information is valuable to bad actors,” she said. “Every launch we have that sends a new satel- lite up has greater capability than the last one.”
Wynn said that although the explo- sion of technology and connectivity plays a role in innovation, “everything has a dark side.”
“I’ve got to make sure the foundation is continuously evolving so we’re on a journey to transform that network... and manage those risks to the extent practical,” she said. n
