the private sector to gather more information on both mobile cyberthreats and cyber strategies.
In preparing its report, the DHS Science and Technology Directorate teamed with GSA on a request for information about high-level mobile threats. In a similar vein, the Federal Trade Commission last year asked major mobile device vendors to share best practices for keeping on top of mobile security OS and application patches.
There is still clearly more work to be done. At this point
though, it is not a question of whether agencies can address concerns around acquisition, security and related issues. It’s only a question of how they do so. There’s no going back at this point. Mobility is too much of a necessity.
“Small, portable, always on, allowing instant Internet access and a diverse set of mobile applications, these computing devices have become indispensable to many people and already are improving workforce productivity,” the DHS report states.

As more government agencies integrate mobility into their infrastructure and operations, they need specific tools to support those devices. Widespread use of mobile devices requires several categories of specialized tools to operate in an efficient and secure fashion.
VIRTUAL DESKTOP INFRASTRUCTURE: Working within a true mobile environment, employees still need access to the apps and data that would more typically reside on their desktops. Implementing a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) can help provide this secure access, while ensuring agency IT can easily update and manage all connected mobile devices.
MOBILE DEVICE MANAGEMENT: As mobile device usage proliferates, Mobile Device Management (MDM) software has emerged as a comprehensive management platform. Beyond ensuring secure access and software updates, hardware-based device management can be a strong asset in terms of applying security protocols directly to mobile devices.
CONTENT MANAGEMENT: With staff working everywhere and with myriad devices, content management is critical. Agencies need a system that enables end users to edit and share content securely, while also providing a foundation for intelligent business processes.
EXPENSE MANAGEMENT: Employees on the move are employees conducting agency business beyond the scope of the office, and often require reimbursement for travel, dining, office supplies, and any other expenses incurred while on the road. Expense management platforms are replacing the traditional handful of receipts for business expense reimbursement.
ENDPOINT SECURITY: A fleet of mobile devices means a network with a greater number and variety of endpoints. To protect those devices, and the network to which they’re attached, requires flexible and capable endpoint security.
ENTERPRISE MOBILITY MANAGEMENT: Managing a mobile workforce and the devices that drive their productivity is a daunting task. Enterprise Mobility Management platforms have evolved to include not only device management and access control, but also app updates, content management and security.
