 Mobile Security
“There is a balance—and we recognize that—between security, usability and functionality. We believe we have struck that balance.” —Johnny Overcast, director of government sales, Samsung Electronics America
technologies secure devices only at the software layer, which will leave them vulnerable, says Overcast.
Knox custom configuration lets IT managers configure devices to act as a single purpose device. “This means you can customize the screen, and make applications available based on the specific need or job purpose,” says Overcast. This feature can lock a device in kiosk mode to prevent someone from using the device in
a way the enterprise doesn’t allow. Another great feature of Knox custom configuration, is the ability to create specific profiles that can configure the communication and operation of how a device functions. This can include disabling Bluetooth or allowing only specified WiFi access points, or can be as granular as setting desktop wallpaper—or setting where apps are located. This further enhances the device security profile and eases technical support.
Samsung Knox is well suited to meet the government’s stringent security requirements, says Over- cast. For instance, the company’s products are approved for use by the Department of Defense, and they have received numerous other government certifications.
Industry analyst Gartner Inc. recently gave the company the most “strong” ratings of any mobile security platform for corporate managed security. Knox is also the only platform with “strong” ratings for every security control listed in the corporate managed security category, according to the report. Knox 2.6 is the latest version of the
platform, available on the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge devices. The Knox 2.6 security platform is also optimized for Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
As mobile devices become the norm in agencies, Knox provides the flexibility, management and security
needed for remote government workers to confidently use the devices. “There is a balance—and we recognize that—between security, usability and functionality,” says Overcast. “We believe we have struck that balance.”
