SECURITY AND THE INTERNET OF THINGS
GAMECHANGER
RETHINKING HOW TECHNOLOGY IS USED IN EDUCATION
THE SECURITY CHALLENGES OF IOT
The trouble with the Internet of Things is you don’t always know it’s there or what it’s doing.
COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES are certainly familiar with the Internet of Things (IoT). Just in terms of a university’s physical plant, IoT sensors can help security systems, lighting, water, and climate controls operate more efficiently.
There is now even greater potential to use IoT for teaching and learning. Applying inexpensive, perva- sive sensors to generate data to signal response from connected applications can help the campus commu- nity to stay on top of student status and cater to their needs through MagicBand- or Ocean-Medallion-like technology. That can work for basic tracking—cam- pus shuttle locations or whether a student has at- tended class—or more complex insights, such as how much time a student has spent with a given chapter in a digital textbook in order to generate personalized encouragement.
None of this matters, though, if campus IT doesn’t work out the security issues. After all, many IoT sensors are never officially recognized by the network. Those devices
