Campus Scene IN THE SPOTLIGHT
New Population Health Facility at University of Washington
THE $23-MILLION, 290,000-square-foot Population Health Facility, currently under construction, is conceived as a hybrid facility designed to respond directly to the mission of the University of Washington’s Population Health Initiative—a 25- year vision to address the most persistent and emerging challenges affecting human health, environmental resilience, and social and economic equity across the globe.
Like the programs it houses, the building is designed to engage the world at large, from local to global. Physically and metaphorically porous, the building will provide a welcoming environment for its users and the campus. Tucked into a sloping site on the western edge of the University of Washington’s central campus, the building will open to the neighborhood and the university via entry points on each façade. A multi-story, street-level foyer wrapped in glass will adjoin an open terraced passageway that works its way through the building, further integrating it with campus circulation.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is providing $210 million in funding for the project, which is being designed by Miller Hull and developed by the University of Washington. Construction completion is targeted for 2020.

Guardrails
How do we specify
glass railings?
GLASS DESIGN AND ENGINEERING ANALYSIS
can be inconsistent across projects. There are several possible reasons for this including the treatment of guardrails as a product rather than an engineered structure, general inexperience with glass as an engineered material, and lim- ited access to glass design software in the U.S.
To ensure you have all the pertinent details, ask suppliers to provide you with a comprehen- sive proposal, including detailed takeoffs with specific inclusions or exclusions for each railing style within the project scope. These details should include aspects such as finish, linear footage, structural attachment, and makeup. Additionally, request a submittal package that includes 3D renderings based on the architec- tural and structural specifics for the project.
High-definition surveying (HDS) technol- ogy offers tremendous benefits over con- ventional surveying. It allows for the capture of thousands of critical measurements with precision accuracy, thereby significantly reduc- ing the need for fabrication rework. It also of- fers a much faster track to the manufacturing process by eliminating the risk of human error and saving weeks of manual field measuring.
Regardless of the method selected for analysis, there are two key principles that should be considered when specifying glass railing: the elastic properties of laminate interlayers (and how they change with temperature and load du- ration), and understanding that local stresses— e.g., contact materials, support size, and hole size—are critical. In light of these varying fac- tors, it’s recommended that a good finite element program be used to accurately determine glass stresses instead of any manual analysis.
Glass analysis is the most critical aspect of specifying point-supported glass due to life-safety factors. It’s essential that those who have a stake in a project understand this and take appropriate measures to ensure that building code requirements are met.

Niagara University
Strengthens
Bi-National Presence
New York’s Niagara University has strengthened its bi-national presence with the establishment of an additional location for its Niagara University in Ontario program in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada. The site is also the first-ever university to be established in the City of Vaughan and York Region, and supports the university’s commitment to becom- ing the premier bi-national university
within the Province of Ontario.
For 35 years, Niagara University has
offered programs in Canada, which oper- ate under the written consent of the Min- ister of Training, Colleges, and Universi- ties. The opening of an additional location in the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre will provide Niagara University students and alumni with the culture, resources, and supports necessary for success.
The site will be in the heart of Vaughan’s emerging downtown core, located in the
