EDUCATION DESIGN SHOWCASE • COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES
PROJECT OF DISTINCTION
POMERANTZ LOBBY EXPANSION
AND ART GALLERIES
SUNY FASHION INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY NEW YORK, NY
SUNY FASHION INSTITUTE of Technology is located
in New York City’s Fashion District, at the intersec-
tion of Seventh Avenue and 27th Street. The campus entrance is flanked by the Pomerantz Center and Li- brary, both of brutalist style, presenting an imposing gateway.
This project was an opportunity to reclaim an unused degraded double- height portico on the Pomerantz Building by en- closing it with a structurally glazed curtain wall system and fully renovating the in- terior. A second-floor hung studio added additional space. The renovation pro- vides a vibrant entrance to the campus, which accom- modates the main lobby, public art gallery, and exhi- bition hall. Ancillary support spaces include restrooms and a catering kitchen.
The design artfully uses repetition of proportions and building materials creat- ing a modern space that seamlessly interfaces with the older architectural ver- nacular. New interior design elements include a sophis- ticated lighting and rigging grid above the removable ceiling fins, which can all
be controlled by a tablet at floor level accommodating endless display and lighting possibilities.
Simple natural finishes include limestone, marble, glass, and stainless steel.
