New Student Center for Daytona State
A NEW STUDENT CENTER AND WORKFORCE TRANSITION BUILDING
is underway at Daytona State College in Daytona Beach, FL. Set at the gateway to the campus, the facility presents an 85-foot-high portal, giving the college a significant pres- ence along the famed International Speedway Boulevard that links Daytona Beach to the Daytona 500 International Speedway. Designed by ikon.5 architects, the student center sets a new campus standard for buildings by establishing a strong identity through
the use of regional materials and sustainable features, including custom bronze solar shades, reclaimed stormwater and rain gardens, photo-optic lighting controls, and a ventilated bronze rain screen façade. Other sustainable strategies include the use of pre- and post-consumer recycled materials and high-efficiency HVAC systems.
The four-story building contains educational and recreational spaces. A 500-person events center, dining and servery, group study rooms, gaming and entertainment cen- ter, student clubs and organizations, and the university library are organized around an open commons that looks out on to the campus quadrangle. A writing center and career services center support students transitioning into the workforce.
The facility is scheduled to open in December 2018.

How have advances in
technology impacted
battery-powered
cleaning equipment?
THE MOST NOTABLE recent advancement in battery technology has been the introduc-
tion of higher capacity cells. To differentiate between the terms cell and battery: A cell is the basic unit that contains the electrodes, separator, and electrolyte. An easily recogniz- able example of a cell is an AA battery, which is composed of a single electrochemical cell. The term battery (or battery pack) means a collec- tion of cells, like if you were to add a number of AA batteries together. Higher capacity cells translate to longer battery runtimes.
Higher capacity cells in lithium-ion batter- ies have increased battery backpack vacuum runtimes to approximately 75 minutes. Longer runtimes allow cleaners to accomplish more on a single battery charge.
Another advancement in battery technology is an increase in the number of charge cycles a battery can undergo. Charge cycles indicate the number of times a battery can be completely charged and discharged until the battery fails or starts to lose capacity. We were able to increase the number of charge cycles to 850 in the latest backpack vacuum battery, helping cleaners get a longer overall battery lifespan.
Cordless cleaning is already much faster than cleaning with a cord. For example, when used in a cleaning system, a standard back- pack vacuum cleans 10,000 square feet in one hour. A cordless backpack vacuum cleans the same area in just 42 minutes. The time saved can then be used to reduce labor costs or to reallocate labor and improve cleaning service.
The more battery technology advances,
the more efficient battery-powered cleaning equipment will become. Look for improvements in runtime and charge cycles to get the greatest benefit from battery-powered equipment.

Tuskegee Launches
New Cybersecurity-
Focused Degree
Beginning this fall, students attend- ing Alabama’s Tuskegee University who are interested in careers in the computer engineering industry will have a new academic pathway to fulfilling their professional goals.
A new bachelor of science degree in computer engineering will focus
on computer hardware design and cybersecurity engineering. The degree
program is based in the newly renamed Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Besides incorporating existing electrical, computer science, and me- chanical engineering courses, the degree program includes 22 credit hours of
new computer engineering courses. The addition of these courses also results
in a new computer engineering minor available to computer science students, and a new computer science minor for
