Purdue Opens Active
Learning Center
The Thomas S. and Harvey D. Wil- meth Active Learning Center (WALC), which will serve as a new centerpiece in the heart of Purdue University’s campus and as a daily destination for thousands of students, is up and running on the university’s West Lafayette, IN, campus as the academic year begins.
The center, under construction for more than two years, offers students a unique learning experience through ac- tive learning and integrated study rooms and library spaces. The WALC combines library and classroom space.
The facility will have 27 active learning classrooms, each designed to meet a variety of scenarios. Sight lines are important in the rooms so that the
instructor can be anywhere in the room and still be visible and accessible.
The center houses the Library of En- gineering and Science, which combines six formerly separate libraries: Chemis- try; Engineering; Life Sciences; Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences; Pharmacy, Nursing and Health Sciences; and Physics, their collections, new tech- nology and active learning classrooms.
New Academic
Department at
Tulane University
The Tulane University School of Sci- ence and Engineering in New Orleans, LA, has created a first-of-its-kind aca- demic department dedicated to research and education in river-coastal issues.
The department will be unique in that it will focus on the world’s river, deltaic and coastal systems using a combined science and engineering approach. It will recognize the linkages among these set- tings — such as the effects of engineered structures like river dams — on the health of deltas and the adjacent coast.
Undergraduate and graduate degree programs will also be developed that reflect this holistic approach to un- derstanding these river and coastal

HVAC
VRF Technology
VARIABLE REFRIGERANT FLOW (VRF) is a leading edge, globally proven HVAC technol- ogy that can help solve many HVAC challenges faced by educational facilities:
• Increasing energy efficiency. VRF sys- tems with inverter-driven compressors can reduce energy bills up to 25 percent.
• Reducing costs. While initial equipment cost can be higher, VRF’s installation and operational costs are often lower. Standard controls and simpler installation save on materials and labor.
• Delivering fresh air. With advanced filters, zoning capabilities and integration with ventilation systems, VRF can help meet indoor air mandates.
• Limiting operational noise. VRF elimi- nates disruption indoors and out. Indoor units operate as quietly as 19 decibels and outdoor units are quieter than traditional systems.
• Varying loads needs. Full-range variable capacity delivers only the amount of condi- tioning required to match a zone’s cooling or heating demand. Using integrated controls and sensors that measure conditions within each zone, the compressor adjusts speeds to maintain the desired zone temperature.
• Solving comfort issues. VRF’s zoning of- fers personalized comfort control, including the ability to simultaneously cool and heat from one heat recovery system.
• Controlling multiples spaces. VRF can integrate with third-party software. Beyond that, VRF offers a wide variety of controls options, from individual zone controllers to centralized controllers that monitor, schedule and control multiple indoor units through a web browser. Multiple central controllers can connect to a building management system.
• Minimizing maintenance. Little mainte- nance is required and doesn’t require a spe- cialized service contractor. VRF components are easily accessible, yet also safely tucked away within the system.
